Since April 2010 Alkira Marine Services has been contracted to Thiess Services for the Hunter River Remediation Project which includes marine transfers, spill response, site turbidity testing, silt curtain maintenance and dredge assistance. This site is the former BHP steel works which started in 1915 and closed in 1999 with employment peeking at over 11,000 people in 1958. During its 80 years of operation the steel works was the largest in the British Empire and produced steel for the modernisation of Australia including the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Alkira Marine Services has had crews onsite 24/7 for the past 10 months and as dredging is in its final stages will also be assisting with Validatiion of the different zones. With over 1,000,000 cubic metres of sediment dredged and more than 1,000,000 hours worked this has been a monumental project.
